The frog dropped away — and a friendly Enttäuschter Smiley stood in front of her. An accredited librarian and researcher, Heidi is also a columnist with Faerie Magazine.

When it lightens say that I am dressing; and when it thunders, that I am coming. The prince, trusting to her word, set out for the palace; and the frog jumped up to the window, and standing on her hind-legs, began to sing:.

My beauty of yore; And my bright youth once more; All my dresses so fair; And my jewels so rare; And let me delight My dear love by the sight.

Then the seven beautiful damsels, who were the handmaidens of the princess—when she lived with her mother—floated on the sunbeams into the room. They curtsied, walked three times round her, and pronounced some magical words.

Then the frog-skin fell off her, and she stood among them a miracle of beauty, and the lovely princess she was. Meanwhile the prince, her husband, had arrived at the royal banquet-hall, which was already full of guests.

The old king welcomed him warmly, and asked him:. And the lovely princess came in, seeming to bring the sunshine with her.

They all stood amazed at her beauty. The king could not contain his delight; and she seemed to him all the more beautiful, because he thought her the very image of his long-deceased queen.

The prince himself was no less astonished and overjoyed to find such loveliness in her, whom he had only as yet seen in the shape of a little frog.

Then she will have to remain just as she is now. The prince did as his father told him, went home, and threw the frog-skin into the fire, where it was at once consumed.

But things did not turn out as they expected; for the lovely princess, on coming home, sought for her frog-skin, and not finding it, began to cry bitterly.

When the prince confessed the truth, she shrieked aloud, and taking out a green poppy-head, threw it at him. He went to sleep at once; but she sprang up to the window, sang her songs to the winds; upon which she was changed into a duck, and flew away.

He rode on for a very, very long time, till one day he came into a wide plain, all covered with poppies in full flower, the odour of which so overpowered him, that he could scarce keep upright in his saddle.

Then he saw a queer little house, supported on four crooked legs. There was no door to the house; but knowing what he ought to do, he said:.

The hut with the crooked legs made a creaking noise, and turned round, with its door towards the prince. He went straight in, and found an old fury, whose name was Jandza pronounced Yen-jar , inside; she was spinning from a distaff, and singing.

I know your bride, the beautiful daughter of the Queen of Light; she flies to my house daily, in the shape of a duck, and this is where she sits.

Hide yourself under the table, and watch your opportunity to lay hold of her. Hold her fast, whatever shapes she assumes; when she is tired she will turn into a spindle; you must then break the spindle in two, and you will find that which you are seeking.

Presently the duck flew in, sat down beside the old fury, and began to preen her feathers with her beak. The prince seized her by the wing.

The duck quacked, fluttered, and struggled to get loose. But seeing this was useless she changed herself into a pigeon, then into a hawk, and then into a serpent, which so frightened the prince, that he let her go; on which she became a duck again, quacked aloud, and flew out of the window.

But as she is your bride, I must find some other way to help you. So the prince went on day and night, following the ball of thread, till he came to another queer little house, like the first, to which he said the same rhyme, and going in, found the second old fury, and told her his story.

The duck flew in, as before, and the prince caught her by the wing; she quacked, and tried to get away. November 18, One fine evening a young princess put on her bonnet and clogs, andwent out to take a walk by herself in a wood; and when she came to acool spring of water, that rose in the midst of it, she sat herselfdown to rest a while.

Now she had a golden ball in her hand, which washer favourite plaything; and she was always tossing it up into theair, and catching it again as it fell.

After a time she threw it up sohigh that she missed catching it as it fell; and the ball boundedaway, and rolled along upon the ground, till at last it fell down intothe spring.

The princess looked into the spring after her ball, but itwas very deep, so deep that she could not see the bottom of it. My golden ball has fallen into thespring.

He can never even get out of the spring to visit me,though he may be able to get my ball for me, and therefore I will tellhim he shall have what he asks.

As soon as the young princess saw her ball, she ran to pick it up; and she was so overjoyed to have it in her handagain, that she never thought of the frog, but ran home with it asfast as she could.

There once was a Princess. She was not an ordinary princess, however. This Princess loved to play alone in the palace gardens while she tossed around her favourite beaming golden ball.

Now, the problem with playing alone was that no one was ever there to catch the ball if she tossed it too high in the air.

One day, as she was running around lilies and daisies and hedges and roses, she tossed her ball higher in the air than she ever had before.

Her beautiful golden ball had plopped right into a small pond nearby! She ran over to the pond and watched sadly as the golden sphere sank deeper and deeper into the water.

The princess looked down at her dress. She was wearing her favourite golden dress; the sparkles and gems on the front of the brilliant gown were rare and she was afraid that if she entered the water she would destroy her outfit.

Frustrated with her situation, the princess began to cry. Suddenly, the Princess heard a strange noise coming from the middle of the water.

The Princess looked up and scrunched her face up at the sight of the green creature sitting on the lily pad.

You can have anything you desire! That's all. A friend to spend time with me, to eat supper with me, to read for me, to sleep beside me, and to kiss me goodnight!

And with that, the small green frog hopped into the water and retrieved the Princess' gold ball.

She had been a shepherdess in her happy livelihood when a condor - a giant vulture with wing spans over 10 feet - had plucked her away and carried her back to its nest high up in the rocky cliff.

Every day she had to work hard. The condor brought back its prey, dead vicunas those are animals in the llama family , and she had to beat the vicuna skins into rugs for the cave nest and into blankets.

She also had to prepare huge meals to satisfy the voracious appetite of the condor. She dare not even leave the cave even for a moment, for the condor could see her from very far away and swoop down in a moment's time.

Who knows what it would do? Sometimes the little frog watched the condor sail high in the air and swoop down for its prey.

To the frog, the condor was a marvel to behold. Indeed, between its wingspan and weight, the condor of the Andes Mountains is the largest flying bird in the world.

One day, the frog decided followed the condor home. The frog could walk well enough even with her too-long leg, and before long reached the high mountain cave of the condor.

There she overheard this conversation-. Now I really need to go to the stream to wash my clothes. Do you take me for a fool? You would try to escape!

Look, I simply must wash my clothes. Besides, as long as you hear me beating my clothes on the rocks, you'll know I'm still there.

But be sure I hear you beating the clothes. Or I'll fly there in a second and beat you myself! So the girl, whose parents had named her Collyur, a name that means Morning Star to her people, wrapped herself in one of the vicuna skins.

She tied her clothes into a bundle and carried the bundle to the stream. As Collyur beat her clothes against the rocks, she cried bitterly for her lost freedom.

She was nothing but a slave, tending to the condor's every demand, while fearing every moment for her life.

It wasn't fair! But she could see no way out. Collyur looked down to see a little frog on a rock, looking at her with sympathy. And the girl poured out her troubles while the frog listened and sighed.

For a few minutes, I can change myself into any creature. If I change myself into you and keep beating your clothes, the condor will think you're still here.

And you can escape. The stern look from her father caused her to go red with embarrassment. She told him that she had promised the frog that she would spend time with him, and eat supper with him, and read for him, and let him sleep with her, and kiss him goodnight.

He's gross! With that the girl slowly shuffled over to the door and opened it up. The frog ate supper with her, and then followed the Princess into her bedroom where she began to read.

Sadly, the frog hopped over to her bed and sat down on her pillow. Before he could get comfortable, the Princess ran over to him, picked him up, and placed him by the window.

She sighed and took him back with her to bed. She read him a bedtime story and, surprisingly, the frog was quite smart and funny.

She actually enjoyed his company. When it was time to sleep, the frog asked her for a bedtime kiss. She refused, scrunching her face once more at the sight of the green creature before her.

The Princess shut out the light and tried to go to sleep. Suddenly, she heard the sounds of weeping. She turned the light back on to see the frog beside her, wiping tears from his eyes.

She was hit with a wave of guilt for making the poor frog cry. She tucked him in bed beside her and kissed him gently. All of a sudden, the small green frog transformed into a handsome young prince right before her eyes; she jumped back from the bed in surprise.

The Prince informed her that an evil witch had put a spell on him and only a kiss could return him back to his original state.

It just so happened that the Princess was the first one to break the spell. Forever after, the Prince and Princess were able to play together in the palace gardens.

The Princess was happier than ever to have a playmate and, whenever she accidently threw the ball too high in the air, she was ecstatic to have a companion to go and fetch it for her.
